It took me far too long to decide to protest child safety online. I also couldn't decide if I should make the topic more specific and focus on loot boxes and gambling mechanics and how they're affecting children or leave it broad. I planned to make a few ads that could be posted on Instagram, as that's a good way to interact with the parents of the children being affected by this problem. Many current parents are used to using the internet and are aware of some of the stuff on it but didn't grow up with it so don't know how it could be affecting their kids. Most Instagram ads have quite a muted colour scheme so I wanted to use similar colours. I settled on blue and purple which wasn't what I was intending on using as most of the ads are warm beige or pink. I think it works as it still fits the Instagram ad aesthetic while also standing out. Blue is also a calm colour, which I used in the hope that it wouldn't scare the parents viewing the ad. My research showed that parents are more willing to listen when they aren't told they're doing something wrong so I wanted my work to give off that vibe.

First week of thumbnails. I spent a bit of time looking at what others had done and specifically tried to think of ideas that weren't already done. No offence some of the artists but it felt like they read the first few paragraphs and left it at that. The Front Cover: The front cover design ended up being the first idea I came up with, even after thinking of others I preferred the violin metaphor over the others. The violin represents both the good and bad Gregor goes through, hearing his sister play and imagining her thanking him keeps him happy while getting too absorbed led to his downfall and eventual death. I edited the original image to check if it looked better with heavier shadows. I looked into various gothic fonts for the title, it needed to be unsettling but still legible as well as being the right kind of vintage. www.dafont.com/cretino.font?text=The+Metamorphosis&back=theme Single Page Interior: I settled on the scene where Gregor imagines being able to thank his sister while hiding under the bed as she enters his room. There's a lot of body language I could work with there and as I was struggling to pick a scene I decided to pick one that would play to my strengths the best. I used my computer to edit colour into the thumbnail and even though it looks terrible it was a good way to experiment quickly. I wanted the sisters skirt to be flowing around him as if protecting him, its his imagination that is keeping him somewhat happy despite his real sister being in the room and looking disgusted. All I'm able to provide are awful images of the final piece, Its very dark but you can see things better in person. I brightened the colours in the second image to fix the complaints that no one could see the cockroach on the floor. Double Page Monochrome: These are the passages that I ended up using as inspiration:
I couldn't figure out a good way to portray the exterior of the house at first, despite the story describing it in such detail. After looking into camera angles used in horror films I came up with a lot more ideas and ended up preferring them to the interior. My next idea was the eye looking into the house, adding spooky symbolism into the scene as well. In the end I decided the skull windows were a bit silly looking and the eye looking in ended up feeling like the threat rather than a scared man. Took me a while to realize the chapter header couldn't spoil the entire story, so my final illustration is the furniture being unpacked with only a small amount of spook.
I spent a lot of time deciding what colour to use for the small details in the large final piece. I eventually settled on red and it didn't clash as much as I was worried it might. I also added a bunch of little spooky details, mostly because I love researching that kind of thing. I had a lot of trouble thinking of metaphors that said everything I wanted them to. Most of my ideas ended up being confusing or not portraying tech well enough. I also found that researching the topic of the article further confused my illustrations. The article I was given was pretty neutral on opinions, I formed a pretty positive opinion while reading, and any other source I read made me think it was a negative thing.
In the end I was thankful I got two illustrations to work with, as I could split the whole article into two metaphors, making both easier to understand. |
