I couldn't figure out a good way to portray the exterior of the house at first, despite the story describing it in such detail. After looking into camera angles used in horror films I came up with a lot more ideas and ended up preferring them to the interior. My next idea was the eye looking into the house, adding spooky symbolism into the scene as well. In the end I decided the skull windows were a bit silly looking and the eye looking in ended up feeling like the threat rather than a scared man. Took me a while to realize the chapter header couldn't spoil the entire story, so my final illustration is the furniture being unpacked with only a small amount of spook.
I spent a lot of time deciding what colour to use for the small details in the large final piece. I eventually settled on red and it didn't clash as much as I was worried it might. I also added a bunch of little spooky details, mostly because I love researching that kind of thing.
