FINAL PROJECT:

Mix and Make
A children's magazine

Inspiring Creativity:

The purpose of my magazine is to inspire creativity in children aged 4-7 without the use of technology or expensive art supplies.
If it were real, it would be available in the newspaper/magazine racks at the front of supermarkets and would be free.
The magazine would be weekly and cover seasonal topics, (like spring or summer holidays) or events such as world book day.
I'd aim to have each issue contain 8 or 9 activities that could be completed in around 30 minutes as children in this age group may not have the attention span for longer activities.

Issue 1, Spring:

I imagined the magazine starting around the time I started making this project, so spring would be a seasonally appropriate first issue as it would be available surrounded by similarly themed Easter things.
Making this one first meant that there's a lot more development of certain pages while I figured out how to design a page layout.

Issue 2, Space:

I chose space for the second issue as it is very different from spring, so would hopefully draw in kids who weren't interested in the last theme.
This magazine as a whole is gender neutral and I avoided activities that would be considered 'male' or 'female', however, the colour scheme of the space issue does have a more traditionally masculine colour scheme compared to the more feminine spring issue.

Introducing the characters:

Here are the final designs for the animals and space creatures I designed for the magazines. The final designs ended up very fun and full of personality.

Where to find it:

If this were a real magazine it would need a shelf in the magazine and newspaper section that you typically find at the front of supermarkets. Rather than the long magazine racks, I was thinking the free newspaper sections at the front of the store.

I would also like it to have a website that parents could access for more info about the product, which you can find a mock-up of by clicking the Mix and Make button at the top of the page.
Here are some mock-ups of posters that would decorate the magazine holders. Having extra bits or cutouts would help draw the eye and differentiate it from other magazines.
