design and exploration (what we do in the studio)
primary methods:
practice led- mind maps, sketchbook/blog notes(is it subjective and full of personality or robotic), interviews
application of theory (that comic analysis might make me better at comics because i know ways to present it)
secondary methods:
theoretical frameworks(fields of research), reading lists, lit review, case studies
narratology- structure of stories and their cultural significance(why something was popular when it was)
essay tips- answer the question, synthesis of reserch + analysis, harvard ref(google this)

Global cultures and Ethical design

Shared common destiny
cultural exchange and hybridity- those metal biker dudes in Africa, punk in Myanmar
cultural imperialism, one culture dominates (America)
post traditional community- trad comm, being rooted(all used to work in factories??), historical ties(im not from horwich) , fixed spatial env(like 9 pubs on one street), shared rituals(yearly morris dancing, carnival), moral certainty(fuck our local government, mum is the only hierarchy I respect)

Brands/corporations:
corp- immortal(power and wealth), ephemeral, agressive, chameleon like(disneys a girlboss now)
brand is the image/lifestyle of corp.
Picture
Personal Manifesto:
I don't want to work for anyone who wants to create hate speech or work for any companies that support that, whether they are commissioning me to make that or not. I also wouldn't want to work with any companies that aren't being ecofriendly. Id be fine working for anyone of any religion, race, sexuality or gender as long as they don't want me to say mean things. I currently wont draw animals (I need more practice) and I wont draw mechs.

Gender

3/10/2021

]gender- culturally defined, roles change over time, represented in media
venus and mars, back in the 16th century it was the norm for women to be unfulfilled in sex
patriarchy- good girl typeface. theres always more men at the top of fields and it sucks
essentialism/structuralism- dolls vs trucks.
gender performance- we learn how were supposed to act
political, economic, scientific and social elements
male gaze- please stop looking at our tits. is there a female gaze now that more women make films (no its more of a male fantasy than designed to appeal to women)my opinion
letraset - type catalogue 1984 traced images from 60's magazines
erving goffman gender advertisements- analysed ads from the 60's and 70's
- ritual subordination of women
- power dynamic, home/work each are out of their depth in the other
- way the body is displayed. active forceful/ passive yeilding

tiger who came to tea, stay at home mum who cooks for dad and looks after the kid. very gender norm of them but its not a bad thing. dad saves the day by going to a cafe, mum saves a future day by buying tiger food
Laura Mulvey: visual pleasure and narrative cinema:
- a lot of men's views of female characters in cinema can be traced back to Freud.
- Language ties us to patriarchy  in a way we cant separate yet. Similarly, alternatives to Hollywood blockbusters can only be made because they have something to respond to.
- Bringing up how women are viewed kills some of the sexualization. Assuming men don't fully notice it until its pointed out.
- Scopophilia, pleasure from looking at something. Objectifying

conspiracy theorists are a subculture lol
sunbculture started as a study of deviants (1800's) gin lane (will hogarth)
teens with disposable income now hate their parents
popular, safe, vanilla, unproblematic because it ignores anything none white, that or offensive jokes
found in gov laws, authorities and economic systems. school and work with their rules. dominant ideology w/ interests of powerful social groups
The Beats (1950's usa) Will, enjoyed reading, didnt like the new consumerist society, anti censorship, liberal sex, gender and releationships
im a beat chick

core.ac.uk/display/214930308?recSetID= "People in modern times no longer live in small, homogeneous communities. Those communities have been replaced by large, diverse and complex societies. The societies are composed of multiple smaller groups sharing beliefs, customs and interests that are different from the rest of society. Although such groups are connected with the mainstream by many cultural aspects, they show their own cultural diversity. The groups display boundaries that isolate them from the rest of society. Those groups that share a characteristic set of norms, values and behavior are referred to by sociologists as subcultures."

Cottagecore is a subculture about wanting to live a simple country life. Its ecofriendly as well as regular friendly, people just wanna chill in a field. Most people in this subculture only dress the part, or compensate by keeping a herb garden in their bedroom, because most people cant live in a little cottage in the woods. Its mostly escapism.

SCOTT MCCLOUD:
Gutter between comic panels allows our brain to connect images. Our brain fills in images therefore we are more engaged with the comic and story.
1) moment to moment- doesnt need much thought
2) action to action-
3) subject to subject- stays within a scene or idea, reader needs to think to interpret it
4) scene to scene- deductive reasoning needed, significant distances of space and time
5) aspect to aspect- no time, parts of the same space or mood
6) non sequitur- no relation between panels.

linguistic message- tag line, non coded and coded readings of it

French ad-
linguistic message-coded non coded
image message- coded non coded
anchorage
frame of reference (wwwwh)
tag line- pasta, sauce, parmesan, Italian luxury, font- looks traditional because its old. looks like the font on a restaurant sign.
sounds fancy,
Image- bag feels spontaneous, contents spilling but the brand names all face the camera. red, white and small bits of green. food+logos fall from top left to bottom right and leads eye to tag line. items are in the same order as the tag line. arranged like a still life.
cultural stereotype, Italian through a French lens
upper middle class shoppers, French, in a magazine, 1960's

new fragrance tells us nothing but its new.
its selling Jennifer Lawrence more than the perfume
hopefully it doesnt smell like chlorine water.
some symbolism with dior being placed in the center of joy.
staged looking photo, perfect makeup, hair wet and slicked back in an unnatural way. random superimposed bottle at the bottom.
fresh, youthful, perfect, feminine,

WI ad, issue 114 march 2021:
The ad is targeted towards middle aged or old woman. Clearly shown by the model, the large, easy to read font and the easy to read information down the side.
The lady looks friendly and casual, mug in one hand with the other in her pocket. Gives off a nice vibe, wont be scaring the grandkids when they come to visit.
Everything is blue, another calm colour. *according to google* Blue is a colour that inspires trust and stability, its also very calming. Definitely something an old woman would appreciate. The blue is more than likely aiming for the calm, trusting angle rather than the masculine angle.
Orange price circles *according to google* orange can create a feeling of caution but can also be fun and cheerful. Its opposite to the blue, making the price stand out. It apparently also inspires impulse buyers, added to by the savings indicated in the circles.

Reading words and images notes

2/10/2021

plane of expression- type faces can change how a word is perceived
zuzus petals? its a wonderful life (film) finds petals from a flower his daughter gave him?
anchorage, most images come with words to help explain (the comic reading)
word specific, image specific, dual message, interdependent/convergent, parallel/divergent.
newspaper image with different captions completely changes the story of the image.
denotation- primary meaning
conotation- things you can pick up on (production or intertextuaity, linking with other texts)
Picture
'this is not a pipe' but its a painting of a pipe but its just a painting and therefore not a pipe
cursive handwitting font. no question mark, its a statement
pipe- 1920s, smoking was cool
signature- value, ownership, anti theft
conotation - Freud and his cigars
realistically painted, easy to figure out what it is. the blank background brings attention to the fact it isnt real.
bogstandard pipe, would probably be smoked by a dude on his work break or an old man. dont assume it would be a woman (une is feminine)
need both the image and words for it to make sense

Anchorage:
Using words with an image to reinforce the meaning of the image. Helps stop misconceptions. Used in magazines and newspaper captions eg; that riot photo with a negative caption that was actually the dude asking for help.
Denotation and connotation:
What the word literally means. What words can imply or make you think of.
Intertextuality:
Texts can be influenced by each other. Technically all fanfiction is an example of this.

semiotics notes

structuralist- nurture. essentialism-nature. semiotics-schemas
lang construcs our view of the world, same word means diff things all over the world.
feminists in the 70s/80s, language is very male centered
exchange of minds, mutual understanding to co-operate
symbolic signs, word dog doesnt resemble a dog but you visualize a dog
signifier + signified = sign  initial impulse(word, seeing) + in brain(mental concept)
myth-propagate cultural stereotypes, social norms

1- big daddy is flashy and popular, sparkly outfit, bigger movements to get more out of the crowd, more cheering
giant haystacks isnt popular, less over the top movements, gets booed, dressed in browns.
2- commentator reads stats and says nonsense about their actions
3- ref checks if theyre hugging correctly and gets in the way, riles up both the audience and fighters
4- crowd cheers when big daddy gets hits and boos and sounds worried when haystacks is on top
5- its closer to theatre than sport.
