plane of expression- type faces can change how a word is perceived
zuzus petals? its a wonderful life (film) finds petals from a flower his daughter gave him?
anchorage, most images come with words to help explain (the comic reading)
word specific, image specific, dual message, interdependent/convergent, parallel/divergent.
newspaper image with different captions completely changes the story of the image.
denotation- primary meaning
conotation- things you can pick up on (production or intertextuaity, linking with other texts)
Picture
'this is not a pipe' but its a painting of a pipe but its just a painting and therefore not a pipe
cursive handwitting font. no question mark, its a statement
pipe- 1920s, smoking was cool
signature- value, ownership, anti theft
conotation - Freud and his cigars
realistically painted, easy to figure out what it is. the blank background brings attention to the fact it isnt real.
bogstandard pipe, would probably be smoked by a dude on his work break or an old man. dont assume it would be a woman (une is feminine)
need both the image and words for it to make sense

Anchorage:
Using words with an image to reinforce the meaning of the image. Helps stop misconceptions. Used in magazines and newspaper captions eg; that riot photo with a negative caption that was actually the dude asking for help.
Denotation and connotation:
What the word literally means. What words can imply or make you think of.
Intertextuality:
Texts can be influenced by each other. Technically all fanfiction is an example of this.
